rotoscope

In this tutorial we will show you how to create a hand drawn rotoscope video in Flash CS5.5. Unfortunately there is not way to automate this process so we still need to drawn each frame by hand. Beside it wouldn’t be a hand drawn rotoscope if we automated it now would it. This technique is becoming more and more common so for any aspiring web developer at least having a basic knowledge of what is involved in creating a rotoscope is becoming more and more important.

If your drawing skills are not too crash hot it doesn’t really matter as we will tracing and imperfections can actually enhance the video to some degree. Sometimes this rough shaking of the image, also known as boiling, is the actually the desired effect. This is the case is some cartoon series like the animated TV series “Delta state”. So don’t panic about your drawing skills too much.

This is an example of a simple hand drawn rotoscope.

If you are looking for a quicker method of rotoscoping I have another tutorial on bitmap rotoscoping you could try.

Before we begin we need to have three things at our disposal.

  • A video camera (unless you already have footage to work off)
  • Flash CS5.5 (you can work with other versions however this is what I am using for this tutorial)
  • Adobe Media encoder CS5.5 (again earlier versions should be able to do the job)

We will be making an animation without sound however I will put up a tutorial later on on how to add sound to these videos. Continue reading
