Is it possible to create more than five colors in an Adobe ASE file? Yes it is. Today we will quickly run you through how to do this in Fireworks and Photoshop.
Adobe CS6 ASE files: Adding more than 5 colours to an ASE File Tip
This is more of a tip than an actual tutorial. As we all know when using Adobe Kuler for our color swatches for web design we are restricted to only 5 colors, but web design or design of any kind for that matter often calls for more colors than this.
Can we have more than 5 colors in an Adobe ASE file? Yes we can have as many as we like.
Can we have more than 5 colors in an ASE file stored on Kuler? Kuler only supports ASE files of 3 to 5 colors at present. This has been the case for a long time now and probably not going to change any time soon.
How do we make ASE files with more than 5 colors?
We can do this in pretty much any Adobe program that uses ASE files. Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator just to name a few but we will be covering just Photoshop and Fireworks here today.
Lets expand a color swatch in Photoshop CS6. This should work in pretty much all versions of Photoshop but the version I am using in CS6 and I can only guarantee this to work in this version as well as CS4, CS5 and CS5.5
First we need to open the ASE file we want to add more colours to. So with an image we are working on open we need to open our swatches panel. This is located up the top right hand side of our window.
- Our swatches panel is located up here on the top right hand side of photoshop in most view set-ups.
with this open we now need to clear our swatches so we can bring our Kuler ASE file in without any other unwanted colors getting in our road. So in our swatches menu:
Select Replace Swatches and then once you have done that in the window that pops up navigate and select your ASE file. If you are having trouble finding it make sure you are looking for ASE not ACO files which is the default for Photoshop.
From here adding a color to the swatch is a simple matter of setting your foreground color to what ever color you want to add to the swatch file and then you just need to click inside the swatches panel next to one of the other colors. If you wish to import a second ASE file you made in Kuler so you can combine them select Load Swatches from your swatches menu and select the second ASE you wish to use.
Now once you have all the colors you need in your ASE in your swatches panel open your swatches menu again and this time select Save Swatches for Exchange.
You now have an ASE file you can take into any Adobe product to keep your colors consistent across your project.
The process for Fireworks is very similar to that of Photoshop. We need to open the swatches panel which looks just like the one in the photoshop image but instead of being top right it is usually located in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
Open the swatches menu and select Replace Swatches and navigate to and select the ASE you wish to work on.
Once you have your ASE open read to go select your line or fill color selection:
If you you now click in the swatches panel in any of the blank space you will add what ever color you have selected. If you need to combine another ASE file with this one use your swatches menu and select Add Swatches.
Once you have all the colors you need selected chose Save Swatches from the swatches menu.
